Closure Dates Confirmed For Greyhound Bridge

The closure dates for Lancaster's Greyhound Bridge have been confirmed by Lancashire County Council, as January 29th to August 4th 2018.

The nearby Skerton Bridge will be temporarily made two-way this month (December) and the surrounding traffic system will be re-modeled in the new year to accommodate the temporary closure of the Greyhound Bridge.

The Greyhound Bridge - which carries the A683 over the River Lune, needs what Lancashire County Council describes as "substantial maintenance" to avoid the need for future restrictions on the weight of vehicles it can carry - and ultimately to prevent the need for a permanent closure of the bridge to all traffic by 2029.

Alternative routes will be available for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers.

Some bus services will be affected, which will be publicised by Stagecoach.

The work had been deferred for a number of years until the completion of the Bay Gateway.

Speaking in early August - when the confirmation of the bridge's closure was made, David Hurford, bridges manager for Lancashire County Council, said: "The extensive work [on Greyhound Bridge] means we will have to put some diversions in place and make temporary changes to the road network, but we'll do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum.

"We have consulted local businesses and residents about our proposed plans."

The total estimated cost of the works is around £4 million.
