Lancaster & Morecambe College has been paid a visit by a former student, who presented a session to students on essential employability skills for a variety of careers.
In 2012, Daniel Flynn - who is now owner of Dan Flynn Personal Training Ltd, enrolled to study a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training at the college.
The session is suitable for adults aged 18 and above who are seeking employment within the fitness industry with the aim of developing a career as a Personal Trainer.
On completion of his qualification, Dan found a lack of employment opportunities in his chosen field at the point in time. He then enrolled on a Sports Science Level 3 course at LMC to further enhance and support his career aspirations.
Whilst embarking on his new course, Dan gained employment at a local gym and began to utilise and develop his personal training skills.
On completion of his course Dan invested his own money to set up his own personal training business which he currently runs.
He said “It’s really humbling to come back here. When I was here as a student, I was very nervous and extremely shy, I was always the quiet kid at the back of the classroom but by leading coaching sessions my confidence began to grow.
Halfway through my Sports Science course I was very fortunate to secure employment. My tutors were really accommodating in helping me with my workload so that I could both work and study.”
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport student Edward Brownell is looking towards a career in personal training and commented that “After this session, I feel that I definitely still want to follow this career pathway. Dan is a very outgoing, confident person who clearly has a desire, like myself, to help people.
"The training session increased my awareness of the need to encourage people to become more involved with their own personal training in order to improve their general well-being and self-confidence. I really enjoyed the session today.”
Level 3 Sports Science student Charlie Isles said “I have learnt about the benefits of speaking in a positive encouraging manner whilst maintaining a good rapport with people.
"Being a Personal Trainer is a career pathway that I really want to follow. I have a particular interest in personal training for expectant and new Mums. I also want to be involved with people who have medical conditions in order to help them with their rehabilitation programmes and to assist them to ultimately gain a good quality of life.”
Level 3 Public Service Student Callum Steele said “I have become more knowledgeable about the necessary fitness levels required by myself in order to serve in the Armed Forces.
Level 3 Public Service student Caitlin Slinger said “I am hoping for a career in the Fire Service and I have learnt a lot today. I have gained knowledge about the importance of interpersonal skills and communication with clients and people.”
The Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training qualification is is a part time course geared towards a career in the fast growing industry of fitness instruction and personal training.
The course is delivered by qualified staff one evening per week for three hours over a twenty five week period.
