Lancaster's Late Night Shopping Sees 15% Christmas Footfall Rise

Lancaster's business leaders have reported a rise in the number of people enjoying Christmas shopping in Lancaster in the run-up to Christmas.

The latest figures from Lancaster's Business Improvement District team suggest there was an increase of just under 15% in the final week of trading before Christmas Day itself.

Lancaster BID Manager, Rachael Wilkinson (pictured) said: “Shoppers were certainly out in Lancaster in the run up to Christmas, with footfall being up +14.2% in the week before Christmas."

While the final Friday before Christmas Day traditionally sees workers down their tools and enjoy a festive drink in the city's bars with friends, family and colleagues, it also proved to be the city's most productive day on the high street.

Rachael continued: "Friday 22nd December was the most popular day to shop, with an uplift of +18% on the previous year and was the busiest Friday in Lancaster in the last two years!"

However, it wasn't just the 22nd of December that saw a significant surge in shopping activity, but the month as a whole.

"The night-time economy also saw an uplift in December, with footfall being up +13.7% compared to December 2016”, Rachael added.
