The Manager of Lancaster's Business Improvement District team hopes a strong national showing on the high street in September will continue in the run-up to Christmas locally.
The UK high street has had its best September for five years, according to the BDO's High Street Sales Tracker.
It shows like-for-like sales nationwide increased by 2.9% last month - which is the best growth since April 2014.
Some department stores say people have started their Christmas shopping early.
Commenting, Lancaster BID Manager Rachael Wilkinson said: “It is great to see the high street performing well in September.
"After quite a damp and slow summer, it’s great to see footfall returning to city and town centres.
"We hope this trend will continue into October as the Students return to Lancaster. “
Meanwhile, Chris Beckerman from Roubaix Group, the owners of Lancaster's Marketgate shopping centre said: “This September’s surge in sales is good news and shows the underlying strength and appeal of the UK town centre retail sector.
"At Marketgate, we are also seeing strong footfall at present and an increase compared to the same time last year.
"The great British public is voting with its feet and, with the UK high street seeing such a positive September, we’re looking forward to a lively autumn and successful run through to Christmas and beyond.”
