Team Reece is the vision of a very inspirational boy called Reece Holt. Reece is 11 years old and is currently fighting an aggressive relapsed Malignant Anaplastic Astrocytoma Brain Tumour. In the last 18 months Reece has undergone three craniotomies to resect the tumour, had chemo wafers directly into his brain, undergone Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy simultaneously, completed 14 cycles of Chemotherapy and is currently on an Immunotherapy trial. Reece also has developed seizures since the operation to remove his tumour which have seen him admitted ti hospital and left him once again fighting for his life.
While Reece did get a 4 week break from treatment this wasn't quite all his mum had hoped it would be. This was due to the cost of staying in Alder Hey for 8 weeks during the initial collapse and subsequent operations and then the cost of a 6 week/180 mile daily round trip to Clatterbridge for Reece to undergo Radiotherapy. It meant they were unable to do anything special as a family as the cost of a couple of nights away in a static caravan or hotel was amounting to over £700. Add to this the already spiralling costs of having a child go through Cancer treatment and they just couldn't afford it.
Team Reece had already raised over £9500 for Alder Hey when Reece asked: "If we can raise that much for the hospitals can we not raise money to buy a caravan so other families can use it when their child is going through treatment?" So then the idea was born alongside some other longer term objectives to fund research. We discovered that less than 1.4% of the Cancer Research budget is allocated to Paediatric Cancers, leaving our children using harsh treatments designed for adults. With a 5 year survival rate of less than 20% for Paediatric Brain Tumours, we knew we had to do something to change that for the children in the future. With current spent on research it will take over 100 years to catch up to the level of adult cancer treatments.
When Reece found out Stuart Michaels had organised a charity single that would bring the entire community together to get behind his dream of helping others, he was truly speechless. It's been overwhelming and emotional to see the love everyone has put into this for Reece and all the other children it will help.
Thank you to everyone involved. We can't achieve Reece's dream of helping other children with cancer without you all and you have shown us that we are not alone.
